Surfing sans board

Sometimes we make things too complicated.

Taking our eyes off the diamonds (and focusing on the myth of artificial reefs)

Surfers have scoured the planet for waves. We’ve put many things on the back burner to seek out new waves or return to faraway waves that have carved memories into our minds.
We know where the diamonds are on this planet, they are the waves that already exist… the gems we surf every day. Some are [...]

Footprints of our choices

I love this work by Casey McKee because it illustrates real life.
We tend not to connect the dots in our lives.
The plastic products we buy require oil which must be extracted from somewhere. They require more oil to be manufactured somewhere else and yet more oil to get those products to us.
Our choices have footprints [...]

NJ/NY LNG victory

The Chapters in NY and NJ scored a major victory when the NJ Governor declared he would veto an LNG, Liquid Natural Gas, facility off of Asbury Park.
This was on the eve of public hearings for the project named Liberty Natural Gas.  Previous LNG applications were also withdrawn due to public opposition.

The #1 most littered item is… drum roll… you already know the answer… cigarette butts.
Cigarette butt litterers take a pristine area like the beach and visually [...]

Masuo Ueda from Surfrider Japan talks about the tsunami and unfolding events

Half empty: New Haven says no to bottled water

“If there are 120,000 New Haven residents that are drinking tap water and that tap water is high quality then it should be good enough for our municipal employees.” – New Haven Alderman Justin Elicker
If that’s not good enough Justin offers more simple, logical truths… “Frankly, it’s embarrassing that we use bottled water… [...]

The relentless power of the ocean

We’ve all felt the power of the ocean. Maybe you felt that power of the ocean when you were a kid playing in the shorebreak and not paying attention to an incoming wave. Or maybe you’re a surfer and you’ve been held under water for one, two or even three waves. When I think of [...]
