Beach access Bill passed in Hawaii
I wrote about Surfrider’s stance on beach (and wave) access a few weeks ago. This new Bill in Hawaii is a good example of what we fight for.
The new law requires the Department of Land and Natural Resources to maintain beach transit corridors by prohibiting land owners from planting vegetation that interferes with [...]
Animals helping animals
I described our current ad campaign here. You can get Ts with these images on them here and you can check out other insane ads we’ve run here.
Art for the Oceans 3, Raymond Pettibon and Honolua Bay [25th Anniversary Gala, Oct9th]
What happens to us during our teen years often stays with us for the rest of our lives. The music, the styles, etc. When I think of Raymond Pettibon I’m jarred back to my high school years; arriving at a Black Flag show, checking my skateboard with the bouncer, and heading in.
But the thing [...]
First Lady says find an onramp to volunteerism
As most of you know Surfrider Foundation is a non-partisan organization. Our membership reflects every political persuasion, every gender, age and demographic. I’m sharing this video because transcends politics.
From my perspective I’ve always believed that it’s great to know what you love but it’s even better to act on that love. In this case she’s [...]
Climate change isn’t the day after tomorrow any longer, it’s started the day before yesterday
I know many of us see films like The Day After Tomorrow and think… never.
Someone shows us a photo of what Miami Beach would look like with 2 feet of sea level rise and we think… won’t happen… can’t happen.
But the truth is of course sea level rise will effect coastal cities.
One lesson we should [...]
Blatent, out and out greenwashing
I’ve always loved simple messaging that rings true.
In the ocean of muddled marketing sometimes the best thing to do is tell the cold, hard and sometimes ugly truth.
I loved the premise behind the film Crazy People when the ad exec goes crazy and sends truthful ads to print “Buy Volvos. They’re boxy but they’re good.” [...]
Metal in the sand
I’ve posted about related items in the past. New Jersey comes to mind with their munitions in the sand “anti-marketing” campaign… pushing people away from the Jersey shore.
Here’s a new one. Watch this Surfrider Europe video on the amount of metallic materials on a beach.

Turning earth day into earth life
I’m an Irish citizen and yet I’ve never, ever thought St. Patricks Day was a day I should celebrate. In fact the idea of coloring beer green, a river green or anything else green and calling it Irish… is shallow and somewhat insulting.
I suppose I feel the same way about Earth Day.
We are not talking [...]
