Ipanema

I took this series of photos during a recent trip to Brazil for our International Conference. I traveled extensively prior to coming on board at Surfrider, and since I’ve been here I’ve come to view the world with a very different set of lenses. This collage illustrates those two sets of lenses.

I’d been to Brazil a few times over the years but this was my first trip with Surfrider. I used to simply see a wide, dense beach with no waves and gorgeous indigenous landscapes.

Now I look at this photo I see excellent beach access, relatively clean sand, strong beach culture/usage, but also horrible water quality. All of Brazil has what I’d describe as almost non-existent sewage treatment facilities.
