Offshore drilling represents great risks to our coastal environment, puts coastal economies at risk and will not alter the price at the pump

Let’s start by establishing the value of the coastlines we’re talking about in the United States.

Coastal tourism in CA, FL, NY, NJ, TX and WA alone account for $175 billion dollars in leisure and hospiutality companies, services and jobs.
Fishing from both coasts accounts for $11.8 billion and $1.9 billion in recreational and commercial fishing respectively.

Volunteer of the month (Suncoast chapter) – Jessica Pemble

I’m sharing this post in it’s entirety because… I love the idea of bringing the true muscle of Surfrider forward. The true muscle of Surfrider Foundation is the volunteer. I’m also sharing this because I love the photo to the left. It’s… perfect.
Here is the volunteer of the month from the Suncoast chapter in sunny [...]

US Supreme Court upholds beach access in Florida

Surfrider’s been fighting for beach access all over the world. I had a blog up a few days ago about a beach access win in Maine. For a quick look at some of the beach access cases we’ve championed go here.
The following lays out the details on a recent, high-profile case we were involved in [...]

Offshore drilling becomes a key issue with Floridians

A new poll reports more than two thirds of Floridians want the opportunity to vote on whether to ban net new offshore drilling in State waters.
As more and more oil hits Florida’s beaches this issue is becoming very real.
Check out the Spilltracker wiki where locals are sharing what they are seeing on their local beaches.

Become part of the solution, like Michael Sturdivant is

You may not have heard of Michael Sturdivant but in my book he is a rock star.
When I first watched the video below it stopped me in my tracks. Michael is the Chair of the Emerald Coast chapter of Surfrider Foundation. The Emerald Coast is located in the panhandle region of Florida (near Pensacola) and [...]

Singer Island breakwaters defeated in Florida

After close to 3 years worth of effort, Palm Beach County withdrew its application to build a 1.5 mile series of 11 emergent breakwaters approximately 200 feet offshore of Singer Island.
Singer Island is an important high-density nesting beach for marine turtles, including the loggerhead turtle, green turtle and the leatherback turtle.
The Nat’l Marine Fisheries Service [...]

The what and where > our last 127 victories

Click on graphic for more detail.
Note: Fighting for coastal environmental victories is one single element of what Surfrider Foundation does around the world. I’d venture to say it represents approximately 50% of what we do. Also, while I am confident of the domestic figures accuracy I’m equally confident that there are many victories that have [...]

victory 123. Florida. Lake Worth Surf and Reefs Protected

In a landmark decision, Florida Judge Robert E. Meale recently ruled against the town of Palm Beach in denying the town a permit to dredge and fill 1.8 miles of beach surrounding the Lake Worth Pier with 700,000 cubic yards of poor-quality sediment. In early 2008, the Palm Beach County Chapter, The Snook Foundation, and [...]

Florida officials contemplate banning plastic bags

This is a pretty solid indicator how much mainstream support these bag bans are.
Although perhaps that was obvious when the entire country of China pushed a similar bag ban almost two years ago.
So… what about the rest of the states in the United States? What about the rest of the countries on the planet?
