Los Angeles bans the bag
Katherine Nguyen and Juli Schulz are two of the main contributors / architects of the recent Los Angeles County bag ban. I connected with them today and captured their perspective on the mechanics behind this notable victory for our coasts. Kudos to all involved in this win.

Rise above plastics (via Yusuke Hanai)
My friend and Surfrider pal Ryo Kubota (from SF Oahu and SF Japan) sent me these images from Yusuke Hanai. I’ve been a fan of Yusuke’s work for a long time. Stoked to see him engaging on one of our campaigns. Check out his site here and his blog here.
And this one, also very cool…
Would you throw your trash into your backyard?
Of course you wouldn’t.
But that, in effect, is what all of us have done with our plastic trash that ends up in our oceans.
Two points here.
1. The ocean IS our backyard. I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase “sea level.” Everything higher in elevation than sea level (everything on land) is pulled by gravity towards sea [...]
Call it what it is… ocean trash
I was at a marine debris conference recently. At one point during the round table which covered a myriad of vectors into the problem of single-use plastic pollution in our oceans someone said “let’s stop calling this ‘marine debris’ and call it what it is ‘ocean trash’.”
Sometimes we forget one of the largest challenges within [...]
Feeding plastic to the birds
Ocean trash ends up lots of different places, including the mouths of birds.
More than 1,000,000 sea birds die every single year from ingesting plastic. A million.
This, like so many statistics, is abstract. So on some level it fails to inform and inspire.
What isn’t abstract is looking into the carcass of a sea bird and seeing [...]
There is no better video than a hand-crafted activst video
I’m serious. We squirm when we view massively-funded, overly-slick, Chemical-industry marketing.
There is nothing more authentic than a video/message put together by a group of volunteers.
The only thing better is when they create lines and riffs and have some fun with it… like The Wiley One does here.
Love it.
Thanks Jack
Jack Johnson and the amazing team at Brushfire Records have generously included Surfrider Foundation in their last two world tours and we are forever grateful to them. On the last tour he helped us launch our Rise Above Plastics campaign which has since yielded 17 victories to minimize the use of single-use plastic (Californians, help [...]
